The four types
- Parallel parking — alongside the kerb, in line with traffic. The standard on most residential streets.
- Perpendicular parking — at 90° to the kerb, in bays. Common in car parks.
- Angled (echelon) parking — at roughly 45°, easier to pull into than perpendicular.
- Off-street / driveway parking — on private land, off the public highway entirely.

Off-street parking is the prize for most homeowners — no fighting for a space, often cheaper insurance, safer loading. But to use it you need a legal way across the pavement: a dropped kerb. Without one, driving onto your drive over a full-height kerb isn’t allowed.
