Home / Council Application
The bit everyone dreadsWe handle the whole council application
A dropped kerb needs approval under Section 184 of the Highways Act 1980. It's the part people find fiddly — so we do it for you. You just tell us where you want the drive.
From application to approval.
Only the local highway authority can approve a dropped kerb, and only a registered contractor can carry out the works. We're registered with both Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils, so we manage the whole thing end to end.
- Check feasibility against the highway before you commit
- Prepare the drawings and measurements
- Submit the Section 184 highway licence application
- Deal with all council liaison on your behalf
- Complete the works to highway-authority specification
It works slightly differently depending on where you are.
Nottingham City
We manage the entire Section 184 application for you — start to finish. There's no separate council application fee to worry about.
Nottinghamshire County
The county's crossings are administered by Via East Midlands. They'll contact you for a small fee and a few questions — and we guide you through every step.
Usually not needed — we'll tell you if it is.
For most home driveways you only need highway-authority approval (the Section 184), not full planning permission. Planning permission is only required if:
- the access is onto a classified road, or
- the crossing serves two or more dwellings.
We check this for you as part of the quote — no surprises.
